Woldemariam Hirpa

Director of Policy and Planning , Federal Ministry of Health

Woldemariam Hirpa is the Director of Policy and Planning in the Federal Ministry of Health in Ethiopia. Mr. Hirpa has led the strategic and operational preparation of National Health Plans since 2008.  In 2009, he initiated, coordinated, monitored and evaluated the ”top-down” and “bottom-up” Woreda-based Annual Health Sector Planning processes.

Mr. Hirpa has four years of experience as a senior expert in coordinating and managing reproductive health and family planning programs at the Ministry level. He was a key actor in the development of Reproductive Health/ Family Planning training curriculum and guidelines for mid-level health practitioners in Ethiopia.   From 1999 – 2004, Mr. Hirpa played an effective leadership role in managing and coordinating zonal and district primary health care programs, including Reproductive Health/ Family Planning, HIV/AIDS/STD and TB/Leprosy programs in the Oromiya regional state.

Mr. Hirpa holds a BSc in Public Health from Jimma University in Ethiopia and a MSc in Global Health from Dublin University, Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland. He was awarded a diploma in “Health Works” from Curtin University, Australia and holds a number of health related certificates in Reproductive Health/ Family Planning, HIV/AIDS/STD and TB.
