Senegal: Ministerial Training for Leadership
Senegalese health ministry officials honed their leadership skills at an MLI sponsored workshop in Dakar in July 2010. The 27 participants from the Ministry of Health and Prevention (MOHP) used case studies to enhance individual, group and transformational leadership skills and identify individual and institutional strengths and weaknesses. Newly acquired expertise was tested in an interactive session with a deputy from Senegal’s National Assembly. At the conclusion, participants shared reflections and recommendations for MOHP leadership improvement with Honorable Minister Fada. “The workshop allowed us to challenge ourselves and to identify where we are,” one participant noted. Mary Robinson’s Visit to Sierra Leone: "Health care is a human right"
Former Irish President Mary Robinson joined MLI representatives for a three-day trip to Freetown in July. Highlights of the trip included a private meeting with Sierra Leone’s President, His Excellency, Ernest Bai Koroma and a Policy Dialogue with high level representatives from government and civil society. “Maternal mortality [is a] human rights issue that must be addressed through a holistic and rights-based approach and Sierra Leone is making important progress,” Robinson said. The delegation observed the country’s progress in establishing free care for expectant mothers and highlighted continuing challenges in addressing maternal mortality and expanding access to reproductive health care. Nepal: Negotiating for Greater Country Ownership
Senior staff from Nepal’s Ministry of Health and Population strengthened their negotiation skills to foster greater country ownership and leadership. Through a MLI sponsored training program "Negotiating Health Development Leadership" in August 2010 participants explored managing vital relationships with donors, mitigating potential conflict and conducting negotiations. As in a pilot training session conducted last year, use of case studies and interactive exercises allowed staff to transfer new skills to their daily work. In the spirit of peer learning and country-to-country sharing, Dr. Salif Samake, director of planning and statistics in the Ministry of Health in Mali, another MLI country, participated in the workshop. He contributed negotiation experiences from his country and took back key lessons learned. Dr. Samake said he was struck by the similar negotiating challenges faced by both countries. “We’re dealing with the same issues,” he commented. To read more, click here.
About MLI
The Ministerial Leadership Initiative for Global Health (MLI) works with ministries of health in Ethiopia, Mali, Nepal, Senegal, and Sierra Leone to advance country ownership and leadership in three inter-related policy areas: health financing to ensure sustainable health care for all; donor alignment to ensure that donors work together to support country led priorities; and reproductive health because the health of women is central to the health and stability of communities and nations. MLI is a program of Aspen Global Health and Development, a legacy program of Realizing Rights and is funded by the Bill & Melinda Gat es Foundation and the David and Lucile Packard Foundation. MLI partners are the Results for Development Institute and the Council of Women World Leaders.
